Named
for the Roman goddess of fire and the hearth, she did indeed not
remain a virgin. Vesta had the trademark stretch and style we
always see in Kestrel's kids, plus the very tight shoulders and
elbows that Hal reliably produces. When Judge Barb Norcross nemaed
her Best Junior Doe in Show in New Boston, 2009, she remarked
that Vesta strolled around the ring like a runway model. She was
always well aware of how beautiful she was. She was the second
Best Doe in Show we've had who failed to win a leg for her efforts.
Oh, well. She made up for it at a show later in the year.
She
had a lovely first udder, with rear attachments as high and smoothly
blended as they come. She was only beaten once as a first freshener,
by her herdmate Niniane (who was a 2 year old 3rd freshener--really
not fair.) At the Franklin County Fair 4H show, she was BOB from
the AOP classes over Saanens and her other accomplished herdmates
(including CH and BDIS Dierdre), and Best Doe in Show over 173
other senior does. The judge commented that not only was she the
most beautiful Nigerian Dwarf that he had ever seen, but that
she was perfect in every way. Well. What can I say after that.
I try
not to dwell on the fact that I had decided that she was probably
the nicest doe I've ever bred. She did not have a chance to prove
me wrong, so she will remain young and perfect in my mind forever,
which isn't really the true test of a dairy goat. Still, I loved
her, I was hugely proud of her, and I miss her.
